In December, I received a special message from Sam. She wanted to surprise her Dad and Stepmom with a gift card for a family photoshoot—something memorable and heartfelt. She envisioned this session taking place in the spring, bringing together her family, her sister’s family, and her stepbrothers. Coordinating such a large group can be tricky, especially when it comes to scheduling, outfits, and finding a location that suits everyone’s needs.
To ensure everyone could be there, we decided on Mother’s Day weekend, knowing that most would be in town. We chose Cox Arboretum in Dayton, Ohio a beautiful spot known for its lush tree coverage—perfect for an early start, especially since some of the attendees would include little ones and babies who need to be kept out of the heat or cold as early as possible.
However, I didn’t account for how popular Cox Arboretum is—especially around Mother’s Day. As I arrived, I found cones blocking the entrance, with park rangers only allowing one car at a time. It was clear the park was hosting multiple events that day, including a wedding, prom photos, and various celebrations. Realizing we might be delayed or faced with parking issues, I called Sam immediately.
Fast thinking kicked in— I suggested we head just five minutes down the road toKennard Nature Nook a nearby park I recently explored on a walk. I hadn’t shot there before, but I knew it had some lovely trees and a scenic spot near a white barn that would serve as a perfect backdrop. It was a gamble, but I was confident we could make it work, and everyone was flexible and understanding.
When everyone arrived, we started the session at the white barn, capturing the essence of family—group shots, candid moments, and a few fun poses. We adapted along the way, taking some photos closer together to accommodate the large group and making sure everyone felt comfortable. We even managed to include each family unit naturally, sometimes removing a few people to create balance and harmony in the portraits.
Despite the hiccup, the session turned into a wonderful experience filled with genuine moments and lots of laughter. Sometimes, unexpected surprises become some of the most memorable parts of a photoshoot. Flexibility, quick thinking, and a collaborative attitude helped us pull off a beautiful spring family session that everyone will cherish.
